What Are Veneers?

Veneers are super thin “shells” that are used to improve shape, color, and size. These veneers are bonded to the front of the teeth and create a flawless look for patients. There are two types of veneers that you can get – porcelain or resin. So what are the differences? Keep on reading:

Porcelain VS. Resin

This is really quite simple. Porcelain resists stains and mimics light reflecting properties better than resin. Resin veneers require less removal of the tooth surface and are thinner. Your dentist will discuss advantages to both of these veneer options and you will both come to a decision that’s right for you.

Why do people get veneers?

There are many reasons why people choose to have veneers. Discoloration, chipped or damaged teeth, irregularly shaped teeth, spaces in between teeth and worn down teeth are a few of the reasons why people choose to get veneers. Other reasons are purely cosmetic (and they do look flawless!)

Advantages and Disadvantages

A flawless smile, stain resistance, natural appearance, gum tolerance and a lasting time of 5-10 years are just some advantages. Whilst there are many advantages to veneers, there are also many disadvantages that should be considered. See below a list of items to be considered:

  • The removal of enamel is one disadvantage to veneers – this can potentially make your teeth sensitive to hot or cold foods and beverages.
  • Veneers are not reversible
  • Not repairable if they chip or crack
